More than 100 people experiencing homelessness or vulnerability in Hamilton were warmly welcomed to a community dinner, thanks to the Catholic Youth Office (CYO), led by Jil Yong. This fourth annual event took place on August 2 in collaboration with Te Rautini Church in Dinsdale. The venue provided a space for nourishing food, hot showers, haircuts, laundry services, and a sense of community. Throughout the day, over 100 guests from Kirikiriroa (Hamilton) were welcomed. Some stayed for the afternoon, while others dropped by for a coffee or to freshen up.Starting in the early afternoon, there was a BBQ along with books, games, craft tables, and karaoke, alongside plenty of tea and coffee. Guests shared stories and made connections. Barbers offered not only haircuts but also dignity, conversation, and a listening ear. Orange Sky's laundry truck operated continuously, and volunteers served with warmth in the kitchen and café, attending to every detail with care. Before dinner, attendees participated in a time of waiata (songs), praise, and karakia (prayers), followed by an invitation for personal prayer. Many took the opportunity to share their stories, while others simply sought a moment of quiet blessing.Amid all the physical support provided, “we shared our greatest treasure, Jesus.” Ms. Yong noted, “In that time of prayer, our hope was to offer not just comfort, but a glimpse into the Heart of the Father, for both our guests and the volunteers.” That evening, 64 people enjoyed a hot, three-course meal at beautifully prepared tables. Each guest found a handwritten note and a prayer awaiting them at their place setting. After dessert, they received toiletry packs and were invited to take items they needed from the winter donations table.
